"What struck me most about participating in the Al-Lisan program was the rigorous nature of the work we did. I left thinking to myself that I had maximized my benefit from the short time that I was with the teachers and other students. I wanted to come in and really learn techniques to "access" a classical Arabic text. I left not only with that, but with a deeper understanding of the challenges associated with translation, as well as the intricacies associated with different types of scholarly works, ranging from usul to sulook to grammar. The other major impression that I left with was the atmosphere of scholarly challenging of assumptions that the students continually engaged in with each other. By really looking at the foundations of assumptions that we have built up through our lives, we can detect and shore up weaknesses in our own learning and make ourselves stronger carriers of the message of Islam.
To the organizers, I say jazaakumAllahu bi-khair al-jaza'a. May Allah reward all of you for working to institutionalize Islamic scholarship, an area of sore need in our community here in America. And to the participants, I say never stop pursuing the acquisition of sacred knowledge that will benefit you in this life and in the Hereafter. Remember the du'a of Ibrahim (AS): "Rabbi hab lee Hukman walHiqni bis-Saliheen (My Lord, grant me wisdom and join me to the righteous people)."
