Life of the Prophet (SAW)
Part I
i- From the Transcendent to the Immanent: The Prophet
in real space and time, between revelation and history.
ii- Meccan Space: The Challenge and the Mission. What challenges
did Mecca pose? What was the Prophet’s mission in
the face of these? To what extent did he aim to confirm
Meccan society, and to what extent did he seek to alter
it? To what extent did the Prophet identify with the Arabians
(i.e., as one of them) and what extent did he dissociate
from them? Did the Prophet distinguish between individuals
(e.g., Mut‘im b. ‘Adî, ‘Abd Allâh
b. Urayqat) and the categories (e.g., tribal or religious)
to which they belonged? How did this affect the effectiveness
of his mission?
Part II
iii- Mecca continued. Politics versus religion/
protection versus conversion. Was there a distinction? What
was it? To what extent could it be maintained without ‘secularizing’
the mission?
iv- Medina: The hijrah and its significance. Medina –
a new society or a continuation of Mecca? What challenges
did Medina pose and what was the Prophet’s mission
in the face of these? Did that mission remain the same,
or did it evolve over time? What was the significance of
the “Constitution of Medina”? How much did actual
history affect the Prophet’s manner of proceeding?
Jews versus Judaism?
Part III
v- Medina: Managing a diverse Muslim community:
challenges and lessons. ‘Indigenizing Islam’:
challenges and lessons. The meaning of victory/success.
vi- Contemporary reflections.
