Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is ALIM different other programs?
ALIM is a specialized institute. It is unique in that, aside from providing the substantive knowledge in the Islamic sciences, it goes beyond these basic building blocks and teaches critical thinking intertwined within the elements of true Muslim character as they apply to these subjects.
This leads to Islamic literacy, which allows for the development of empowered Muslims through meaningful discourse and true intellectual and spiritual development. ALIM is not committed to making scholars of its students; rather it seeks to produce Islamically literate members of society that will have a positive effect both on Muslim society as well as greater society.

2. Is knowledge of Arabic a prerequisite?
No. Some knowledge of Arabic is helpful, it is certainly not required.

3. How many spots are left?
This constantly changes, and we cannot accurately tell at any given time. Generally, the pace of enrollment tends to increase significantly after the Thanksgiving weekend, and continues to rise steadily in the weeks leading up to the program.

4. What time does the program start/end, so I can plan my travel arrangements?
We are currently finalizing these details.

5. Will we be able to spend time with other participants and with the ALIM scholars?
In response to the feedback from last year’s Winter Program, we have tried to adjust this year’s schedule, providing more breaks, with increased time to interact with the scholars. This should also facilitate discussion with other students.

6. Can I bring my child – to sit with me, not for baby-sitting?
No. Unfortunately, the possibility that this may distract from the learning and discussion during class-time precludes us from allowing children in the lecture hall.

7. What is the refund policy?
Full refunds will be awarded until 12/31/06, or if your application has not been accepted. After 12/31/06, 50% of the tuition paid will be refunded. After 1/5/07 no refunds will be awarded.

8. Are there discounts available for ALIM alumni? Siblings?
No. We have worked to make the tuition as reasonable as possible. If you require financial assistance, please send an email to winter@alimprogram.com.

9. Are there shuttles provided to/from nearby airports?
Public Transportation is available to/from the nearby airports.

10. If I'm an ALIM alumni, do I have to write the essay?
Yes.

11. Can I come for part of the conference? Is there a partial registration fee?
Yes. No. Any fully registered student is free to attend all or part of the program at his/her choosing. However, in order to best plan our curriculum and provide appropriate facilities, we require all students to pay tuition in full. We would hope that all participants will attend the entire conference.

12. If I want to register for the Alim program, do I have to sleep at the hotel, or can I drive back and forth each day?
No. Unlike our Summer Program, we do not require lodging within the hotel as a requisite for attendance.
